January Sanctuary

January Sanctuary is a painting from the Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary traveling exhibit now being shown at the Carnegie Museum in Decatur, Alabama.

The January 2011 snowfall made a rare and lovely subject for the work of the Sanctuary Artists.

The exhibit was recently shown at the Guntersville Museum and will move to the Gadsden Museum in March 2011.

Below is the plein air piece done as a study for this one. It is currently hanging in the Guntersville AL Art Museum as part of the Art of Nature Show.

Portrait of a young boy. The boat in the distance served as a floating school as the family travelled and home-schooled the children. What a wonderful experience for a child.

The old Miller Place on Hwy. 431 is zoned commercial and is for sale. There is a long driveway of arching maple trees that mark the beautiful entry to the property.

As one in a group of artists, naturalists, writers and historians who are doing work on a series of pieces about the Goldsmith - Schiffman Nature Preserve in the Big Cove area of Huntsville, I am including here the beginnings of my contributions. These are pieces from the fall of 2009.

We are working on pieces to be shown at venues in Huntsville and possibly else where.

Mt. Moran in Grand Teton National Park

. Mt. Moran is a mountain in Grand Teton National Park. The mountain is named for Thomas Moran, an American frontier artist. It dominates the northern section of the Tetons. Several active glaciers exist on the mountain with the Skillet Glacier planily visible on the monolithic east face.

Mount Moran's face is marked by a distinctive basalt intrusion known as the Black Dik.

The artist at work at the site - Red Rock Crossing. The day I painted this a wedding was taking place on the other side of the creek. As the bride was waiting to cross over, she told me she wanted the painting. I finished it and mailed it to her for a unique memento of their wedding day.
